Carbon Black Super C-65 (Acetylene Black): The Conductive Additive with an Optimal Structural Balance, Now Manufactured in Indonesia

The ideal conductive additive for electrode slurry needs a hard-to-achieve balance: too porous like Ketjen Black and the material becomes difficult to disperse evenly at production scale; too dense and the conductive network becomes inefficient. Super C-65, or acetylene black, is known in the industry not for an extreme surface area, but for its well-developed chain structure, the result of a production route based on acetylene gas decomposition that differs from most other carbon blacks. This chain structure is exactly what gives Super C-65 an efficient conductive network even at low loading, while still dispersing evenly in production-scale electrode slurries.
Research labs in Indonesia have typically had to import acetylene black with a genuinely preserved chain structure and high purity. That's starting to change.
ITNANO (CV. Inovasi Teknologi Nano), based at the NRE Lab in Medan, is Indonesia's first private nanomaterials research startup manufacturing Super C-65 locally. Here's what Super C-65 actually is, why its chain structure matters, and where it's being used in research and industry today.
What Is Super C-65?
Super C-65 is produced through the thermal decomposition of acetylene gas, a production route different from the furnace process commonly used for conventional carbon black. This process yields a carbon black with very high purity and a well-developed chain-like aggregate structure, where primary carbon particles fuse together into efficient, branched, electrically conductive chains.
Purity and chain structure integrity are the biggest factors in Super C-65's performance, since both directly affect how efficiently a conductive network forms when the material is dispersed in an electrode. ITNANO's Super C-65 has an impurity content below 30 ppm, taking the form of a black powder, with a pore volume of 400-510 ml/100 g and a density of 17-50 g/cm³. Its particle size passes through 200 mesh at more than 98 wt.% and 325 mesh at more than 80 wt.%, packaged with a net weight of 1 gram per bottle.
Where Super C-65 Is Being Used
Conductive additive for battery electrodes
This is Super C-65's most common application: as a conductive additive in lithium-ion battery electrodes, linking individually less conductive active material particles into a continuous electrical network, with the advantage of good dispersibility during production-scale electrode slurry manufacturing.
Supercapacitors
Super C-65 is also used as a conductive additive in supercapacitor electrodes, boosting overall electrode conductivity without sacrificing the capacity of the main active material.
Black pigments
Super C-65's high purity and deep black color make it a relevant raw material for black pigment applications across various industrial products.
Other composite materials
Beyond the applications above, Super C-65 is also used as a conductive additive in various composite materials that need added conductive properties without sacrificing their base mechanical properties.
Why Source Super C-65 Locally
Chain structure in Super C-65 is a property sensitive to production conditions and handling, and damage to this structure will reduce the efficiency of the conductive network formed when the material is dispersed, even though it remains chemically the same. ITNANO, established by the Titian Research Group's NRE Lab, manufactures Super C-65 domestically with consistent quality control, giving labs in Indonesia a material whose structure and purity are genuinely preserved from the moment it arrives.
Whether you're formulating lithium-ion battery electrodes, developing supercapacitor electrodes, researching black pigment applications, or working with other conductive composite materials, Super C-65 gives you a chain structure and purity that a distant supplier can't guarantee after shipping, without the import wait.
